Geographic details
Benalmádena is a municipality of the independent community of Andalusia
(south of Spain). It is located in the coast of the province of Malaga, well-known
internationally as the "Costa del Sol". Being placed in the coastal strip
between the Mountain range of Mijas and the Sea of Alborán, little over a 100 km of the
Strait of Gibraltar. It displays a mountainous character that almost entering the sea,
conditions its geography. In addition, it is furrowed by streams and torrents. |
Its people
A registered population of 39,000 people exists, but along with the tourists it
reaches 80,000, and in summer it can go up to 240,000. People currently residing in
Benalmádena is distributed around three main distinguished urban zones. |
The Weather
Being typically Mediterranean for its location, with smooth temperatures throughout
the year, without any frost even in the cold months and an annual average of 19ºC (66ºF
approx.), it is not hard to imagine why tourism is the main economic resource of this
paradise. |
Benalmadena Pueblo (Town)
Benalmádena Pueblo is how the old part of the town and its adjacent
urbanizations are denominated. It is located in the slope of the "Pico Mijas"
and its origins go back to the period of the Hispanic-Muslim presence in the zone, when a
walled town and a nowadays destroyed fortress (of wich there are no remains left) were
constructed. "Pueblo" keeps the distinguished white towns of the Andalusian
Mediterranean and also lodges the City Council. |
Benalmádena Costa (Coast)
The coastal zone of Benalmádena is known as "costa" it's the
tourist heart of the municipality and has the biggest hotel concentration. It is crossed
by the old "Cadiz Highway" (that now became Antonio Machado's avenue and the
Avenue of the Sun) that follows the coast line, passes by the Sport Port of Benalmádena
and the beaches, seaside road that starts at Fuengirola, and ends in Torremolinos, the two
border municipalities |
